Another lame repertoire book. Davies will often use the word rubbish as an explanation for why a move doesn't work. Yeah, that is teaching!!

I have been disappointed by two of his books now. (this and his also useless Play 1.e4 e5)

I think that some chess authors forget they actually have to write when they write a book.
Nigel Davies is one of the more prolific and outstanding British chess authors and teachers. His ability to clearly communicate a variety of chess concepts in print and in video has made him an author whose work I have come to expect high quality. Play the Catalan does not dissapoint. The Catalan like the King's Indian Attack and Reti are difficult to classify due to the high level of transpositions among them and the English and other closed openings. Usually, the Catalan is divided into two sections Open and Closed - Davies develops a third category - the Main Line involving a later capture of the pawn. 10. Bd2 is popular at the highest levels of GM Play but Mr. Davies recommends playing 10. Bf4 as a more solid alternative. Other practical recommendations are contained throughout. I would hope that Chessbase would supplement this outstanding book by providing a video lecture on the Catalan - Mr. Davies' easy manner, dry wit and incisive comments has one feel relaxed and focused while learning the material. For players rated 1600 plus who are interested in the Catalan, Mr Davies' latest is highly recommended!
